3,000 crosses to line Memorial Drive

Thousands of white crosses will soon line Memorial Drive in an effort to honour the area’s fallen veterans.

The Calgary Poppy Fund is already building the 3,000 crosses that will be erected along the busy thoroughfare at the end of October after receiving a $100,000 donation from Calgarian Murray McCann.

George Bittman, chair of the Poppy Fund, said each cross represents the estimated number of Calgary and area soldiers who lost their lives in battle and should help remind people of the sacrifices that were made for them.

“I hope it’s going to instil a sense of pride in fellow Canadians who made those sacrifices,” he said.

“We’re trying to do this for the young people and people who don’t know.”
