4 treated after early morning fire

Blaze Four people, including a 13-month-old infant, were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of an early morning fire at an apartment building near the Experimental Farm yesterday.

Thirty-nine firefighters in 11 vehicles responded to a fire on the second floor of a three-storey apartment building at 1180 Shillington Avenue around 2:45 a.m. after a tenant called 9-1-1.

The fire is believed to have started in the bedroom and extended to the rest of the unit.

Fire crews managed to contain the fire to the one apartment, but smoke and water damage did affect adjacent units.

The entire building was evacuated and an OC Transpo bus provided shelter for displaced persons.

The Salvation Army and the Red Cross assisted with accommodations.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but they do not believe it is suspicious.

The initial damage estimate is $150,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.
