A community in Westport is in shock and mourning after a fire on Saturday night took the life of a 4-year-old boy.

Firefighters were called at 10:55 p.m. to 9 Mount Pleasant St. and found a home consumed in flames. As firefighters clamoured into the burning home, one found the body of 4-year-old Caleb Nardolillo.

When the fire broke out, a neighbor reportedly ran into the home in an attempt to save the little boy.

“I couldn’t see anything – it was all smoke” he told WCVB. “The kid was a good kid. I tried my best – there’s nothing I could do.”

The Boston Globe reports that Westport officials could not confirm the neighbor’s account of his attempt to rescue the child.

WCVB reports that the home was also the site of a fire that took the lives of nine people in 1952.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
