50 charges laid in carjack case

A suspected Calgary carjacker now faces at least 50 charges in 19 separate crimes after a 10-hour cross-city robbery and car theft frenzy Sunday.

Richard David Barker, 27, spent several days in hospital, but went straight into police custody, accused of leading Calgary Police on a hunt that touched every quadrant of the city, jacking cars at gun-point, robbing businesses and people and undertaking several hit and runs.

“It was very unusual, very overwhelming,” said Insp. Keith Cain, adding more charges may be in the works as information continues to filter in to police.

Barker’s alleged crime-spree began with a robbery roll-job at Bromley Square at about 4:10 a.m. Sunday and concluded by smashing into a street sign in front of a school on the 3800 block of Marbank Dr. NE around 2 p.m.
