Nine 48-foot semi-trailers rolled into Edmonton’s Southside on Thursday to deliver roughly 500,000 aluminum cans to the city’s recycling plant.
The massive delivery — worth $50,000 — was made as part of the Alberta Cans for Kids project, in which people can drop off their empty pop cans at any bottle depot in Alberta and have the proceeds donated to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
“We have 30,000-40,000 Albertans a day coming into bottle depots,” explained jeff Linton, Executive Director of the Alberta Bottle Depot Association. “So, if every one of those people donates just 1 container then we can raise $3,000 or $4,000 for the Stollery every day.
The goal of the Cans for Kids initiative is to raise at least $100,000 for the Stollery this year, Linton said, so the delivery of half a million cans marked the halfway point for the fundraiser.
“Not only does it help the kids in the Stollery, but it’s an environmental issue as well. So, it’s a win-win situation on so many different levels,” added Jan Archbold, Vice President of Marketing and Communications with the Stollery Foundation.
