A van killed at least nine people and injured 16 others after it jumped a curb in Toronto in what some sources are saying was a deliberate act of terror. Toronto officials said the white van struck the pedestrians at a major intersection in Toronto’s northern suburbs on Monday afternoon. Toronto police have taken the driver into custody, police said on Twitter.
Police in Canada’s largest city initially said it’s possible that as many as 10 people had been injured but later said it was unclear exactly how many had been hurt or the extent of their injuries.
The pedestrians were struck shortly before 1:27 p.m. in the northern part of the city, about 18 miles from downtown. One witness told CNN that the driver was “hitting people one by one,” and another unnamed source told the network that the crash was deliberate.
Witnesses shared images and videos of the aftermath on Twitter. One video showed the police apprehending the suspect, who surrendered with his hands above his head.
