911 trace better for cellphones

The province announced Thursday that Nova Scotia’s 911 emergency service is better able to trace the location of a caller using their cellphone in case of emergency.

A government release said the system can now provide an estimate location of a cellular or mobile handset by estimating longitude and latitude as opposed to the previous system, which could only estimate the location by estimating the distance within the area of the nearest cellphone tower.

The government advises cellphone customers to contact their wireless service provider should they have questions or concerns about the technology used by their provider to identify cellular location.

Most cellphones are automatically designed to allow their location to be traced for calls by 911, a government release said.
