There is another twist in the Gonzalo Veron injury story and this latest installment has the hamstrung New York Red Bulls midfielder currently in Argentina seeking for answers about his hamstring.

Veron, out since early March with a hamstring injury suffered in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League, was penciled in as a possibility to appear this Wednesday for the New York Red Bulls II in a USL match. Instead, according to head coach Jesse Marsch, the Designated Player is currently in his native Argentina “to see a doctor today.”

The decision to go to Argentina comes after Veron has struggled to get fit and recover from the hamstring injury he suffered a month ago.

“He’s had certain parts where he feels stronger and others where he feels pain,” Marsch told Metro New York on Tuesday. “Trying to determine exactly what’s going on.”

The hope had been for Veron to be back this week. He was in the gym at the team’s facility last week with the original goal being that he’d get integrated with the team late in the week and then hopefully with the USL squad on Wednesday.

He has yet to play in the regular season for the Red Bulls.

Now, his return to the field anytime soon looks anything but soon.

Notes

- Aurélien Collin left Saturday’s 4-1 loss at the Houston Dynamo with a quadriceps injury, cutting short the central defender’s first start of the year. He did not train on Tuesday with the Red Bulls but his injury is not as bad as feared.

Welcome news for a team that has struggled with centerback depth issues this year.

“Less than we expected. We’re hopeful that he even becomes an option for the weekend,” Marsch said. “I think he’ll be training by Thursday.”

- Connor Lade, who took a knock in the weekend match and suffered a ribs injury, did some training on Tuesday. He did part of the session before heading inside, part of a planned easing back into the training cycle.
