A new 2020 vision for the Esplanade?

For the last two years, members of The Esplanade Association have worked closely with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, park users and designers to create a new vision for the popular public parcel along the Charles River. This week that vision will be unveiled.

“Our association is eager to see improvements to the area,” said Sylvia Salas, executive director of the nonprofit association.

The project, dubbed “Esplanade 2020: A Vision for the Future,” will put forth the idea of restoring paved land and enhancing pedestrian passageways with the aim of one day bringing the proposal to fruition.

“One would always hope there would sometime be funding available for public space,” said Salas.

Visionary improvements would include new structures and walkways around the Charles.

The group said nothing is set in stone and the presentation is merely a “vision” that’s up for discussion with anyone who wants to participate.

“You have got to put something forward so people will react and think about it,” said Salas.

A vision for the future

A project presentation is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Copley Square branch of Boston Public Library.

Group members would like to see a new cafe in the area.

Members have already begun revitalizing the Elliot Memorial space.

The association wants to work with police to make the Esplanade safer for users.
