A return to the Hub for World Cup?

If the 2,000-plus fans at Saturday’s U.S.-England World Cup watch party at the House of Blues is any indicator, Boston is a serious contender to host live World Cup games in 2018 or 2022.

“We were all overwhelmed with the turn-out,” said Mary Tiseo, executive director of South Africa Partners, which conceived World Cup Boston 2010 and Saturday’s watch party.

Boston, which hosted World Cup matches in 1994, is one of 18 cities in contention to host World Cup matches if the U.S. wins its bid.

“World Cup Boston 2010 has drawn people out and shown [it’s] a town that cares about soccer deeply,” Tiseo said. “We’re excited the [New England] Revolution and city are trying for the bid.”
