A snow decision

Three separate motions of “urgent business” regarding snow removal are on the table today, but the questions remain: What is the best option, and what do Calgarians want?

Ald. Ray Jones will be asking council to reach into the city’s reserves for up to $2 million for better snow clearing, Ald. Ric McIver is asking for the city to install snow fences and Ald. John Mar wants to look to insurance companies to offset some of the city’s snow removal cost.
Jones told Metro while his solution isn’t perfect, it’s a start.

“What it comes down to is, something needs to be done and at the end of the day, we need a solution that appeases most people. We can’t have people locked up in their homes for five days,” Jones said.

While Jones would support McIver’s motion of adding new snow fences, because it could have helped during last week’s storm, he is less sure about Mar’s motion looking to insurance companies to help foot the bill.

“I’m just not sure how that would work,” he added.

For his part, McIver said his motion doesn’t have to be the solution, he just wants a solution that works.

“I just want what’s best for the city, the best possible solution,” McIver said.

Calgarian Jennifer Clark said she would like to know more about snow fences and the insurance options, but would rather the city didn’t touch the “rainy day” fund. “Where would the snow fences go, how much do they cost, how unsightly are they? These are things I would like to know before throwing my support behind them,” she said.
