It’s always summer at Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory and Gardens. Tucked away in the hills near South Deerfield, Massachusetts, it’s close enough to the ski resorts to make a convenient break from the slopes.

A tropical garden fills the conservatory where the temperature is always 80 degrees. It’s the ideal climate for 3,000 butterflies that flutter around the foliage, waterfall and Koi-filed pond. Plenty of benches invite visitors to linger. Often the butterflies alight on their shoulders, making a perfect photo-op.

There are educational displays and kids’ activities in the buildings, but be aware that strollers are not allowed in the conservatory itself. Plan to bring a kiddie backpack or a Snugglie . There’s a food court with soups and burgers, and a sit-down restaurant with a casual, family-friendly menu. The gift shop arranges orders of butterfly-friendly plants and “livestock” — butterflies appropriate for your geographic area.
