Abandoned by owner, injured cat gets life-saving care from strangers

An injured cat left in a carrier by its owner without food or water in Waltham is recovering from life-saving surgery.

Gingerbread, as the year-old cat is now known, was found outside and next to a Dumpster by a Good Samaritan, who alerted Waltham Animal Control.

The chain of events that followed saved the cat’s life.

Gingerbread, which may have been struck by a car after it was abandoned, was taken toMassachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-West. From there, it was sent to MSPCA-AngellMedical Centerin Boston, where medical staff discovered the cat had a shattered jaw and right front leg broken in several places.

The medical staff repaired the cat’s broken jaw but could not save its leg, according to a news release it sent out. The cat’s leg was amputated at the MSPCA’s Shalit-Glazer Clinic in Jamaica Plain.

Due to the extent of her injuries, MSPCA staff believe Gingerbread was hit by a fast-moving car, but authorities are still looking for the person who abandoned the cat.

“We may never know who left her outside to fend for herself, but we’re going to do everything we can to ensure she finds a safe and loving home,” Andrea Bessler of the Shalit-Glazer facility said.

After Gingerbread is fully recovered in a few weeks, the cat will be put up for adoption. Those interested should send an email to adoption@mspca.org.

Anyone who has information about who left Gingerbread outside the home is asked to call Waltham Police at 781-642-6166.
