Accused spy’s mother: My daughter is no Mata Hari

MOSCOW – The mother of Anna Chapman, one of 10 alleged Russian spies arrested in the United States, says her daughter is “no Mata Hari” and she is considering a lawsuit over the breach of her daughter’s privacy.

The 50-year-old Irina Kushchenko says in a video posted Wednesday on Russian Web news site lifenews.ru that she is considering a legal action against newspapers that published an array of Anna’s Facebook pictures that were intended for private use only.

Chapman, 28, has become a sensation with tabloid newspapers that have branded her a femme fatale.

Kushchenko said Chapman has always been “an independent and honest person.”

Chapman is charged with conspiring to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, which carries a potential penalty of five years in prison.
