A man acquitted of murder in the asphyxiation of his lover, prominent gay bar owner Janko Naglic, has filed a $10-million lawsuit against Toronto police, alleging they conducted a negligent investigation.
Ivan Mendez-Romero alleges that homicide investigators Wayne Banks and Peter Callaghan failed to adequately investigate Naglic’s allegations of “extortion.”
“The defendant police officers had information that Janko Naglic had complained that 52 Division plain-clothes officers were unfairly targeting him for liquor licence enforcement because he was not paying them off, yet they failed to investigate this information,” says Mendez-Romero’s statement of claim, which was recently served on the last of three defendants. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Mendez-Romero also alleges homicide detectives did not investigate certain people a neighbour said she saw at the deceased’s home.
