Despite their recent slump, the Red Sox are going all in on 2017 as they acquired reliever Addison Reed from the New York Mets on MLB trade deadline day Monday. The deal comes on the heels of Dave Dombrowski landing third baseman Eduardo Nunez in a deal with the San Francisco Giants last week.
The Red Sox will send right-handed pitching prospect Jamie Callahan, right-handed pitching prospect Stephen Nogosek, and right-handed pitching prospect Gerson Bautista to the Mets.
The 28-year-old Reed will be the set-up man to Sox closer Craig Kimbrel, and instantly gives the Sox bullpen a needed jolt. Reed had 19 saves on the season for the Mets.
It is very much a rental move for the Red Sox as Reed will be a free agent after the season.
Reed was a lights-out closer with the White Sox and Diamondbacks earlier in his career. In 2013 he had 40 saves for the White Sox and in 2014 he registered 32 saves with Arizona.
