Adopt-a-thon chance to give animal a home

If you just can’t live without a furry creature, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to get your new best friend.

The Edmonton Humane Society is holding its second annual adopt-a-thon July 31 to Aug. 2, “led” by Thomas the Cat, the animal sheltered the longest at four-and-a-half months.

“We’re seeing many more animals than usual admitted to us; we are dealing with four times as many,” said Shawna Randolph of the Edmonton Humane Society.

Before, the organization expected 10 to 15 animals brought in per day, but now it is 40 to 60.
Also, there is an overabundance of cats, with 112 cats to six dogs.

“We would not be in this position if people were more responsible and spay and neuter their cats,” said Randolph.

Also, she added that people must “do their homework” before picking up a pet so they are prepared for the costs and the lifestyle involved.

The animals up for adoption all have been spayed or neutered and micro chipped, and have had first shots.
