AG indicts former probation head, Cahill staffer

The former commissioner of the state’s Probation Department and a former chief of staff to ex-state treasurer Tim Cahill, were indicted today in connection with the hiring practices of the Probation Department.

John O’Brien, the former commissioner, and Scott Campbell, the chief of staff, allegedly conspired to organize a campaign fundraiser for Cahill in 2005 in return for a job for O’Brien’s wife.

“Filling a job in exchange for a campaign fundraiser is against the law and undermines the integrity of the hiring process and campaign finance laws,” said Attorney General Martha Coakley, who announced today’s indictments.

It is also alleged that Campbell concealed the identity of the donors to the Cahill for Governor campaign in violation of campaign finance laws.

The men will be arraigned next week.
