Ailing doc gets Order of Ontario

A month ago, Dr. Sheela Basrur was so gravely ill from a rare form of cancer the word went out to friends that this was it.
“I said my goodbyes,” Basrur said. “Then I looked around the other day, and I’m still here.”
Not only is she still here, but her health is on the mend. And yesterday, Basrur, who shot to prominence for her leadership as Toronto’s chief medical officer during the 2003 SARS crisis, became the latest recipient of the prestigious Order of Ontario for public service.
The award was officially announced last night by Lt.-Gov. David Onley after Premier Dalton McGuinty personally championed her case.
