Alberta team seeking causes of inflammatory bowel disease

Finding out you have Crohn’s disease is not something every fit 20-year-old wants to discover.

Now at 30, Patrick Leroux described it as a roller-coaster of unpredictable weakness, steroids and visits to the hospital.

“It’s endless medications and tests, drink this and inject that,” he said.

Leroux is one of the participants in a study by the Alberta Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Consortium, which is seeking the root causes of IBD.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammation of the intestines with symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss.

Dr. Leo Dieleman, associate professor of medicine at the University of Alberta, says the study is important because Alberta has one of the highest rates of Crohn’s in the country.
