Alessa Castellon: Mother shot five times by ‘on and off’ boyfriend

The reported “on and off” boyfriend of a 21-year-old mother allegedly told police he “blacked out” after firing a gun at her in the heat of an argument about their relationship early Sunday.

Junior Fernandes, 22, of Dorchester, allegedly shot Alessa Castellon five times, killing her.

Fernandes called Castellon from a party in Dorchester. When she arrived, the two went outside to talk about their relationship. That talk turned into arguing, according to court documents. Fernandes told police that he fired the gun after Castellon “began to smack, hit and punch” him.

He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment yesterday and his lawyer said he had no record and did not fight the prosecutor’s request that he be held without bail.

Friends and family members of Castellon cried and hugged as the prosecutor detailed the shooting. Her friends said she was the mother of a 3- or 4-year-old son. They described her as outgoing and said she was working on her criminal justice degree at Bunker Hill Community College.

“No matter what happened, she didn’t deserve to go out that way,” said Kathy Guzman, Castellon’s friend.
