If you want to have nightmares
Fairmount’s Eastern State Penitentiary is mandatory viewing for anyone who favors the frightening. A haunted house located within a former prison, ESP’s Terror Behind the Walls features ghoulish guards and other creepy visitors. While they won’t touch you, you’ll be sure to shriek when they jump out from behind dark corners and hidden hallways.

If you’re taking the kids
Linvilla Orchard’s Autumn Moon hayrides run most Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings in October — and end with apple cider and marshmallow roasting. They’re perfect for kids who aren’t quite ready for Linvilla’s Hayrides to the Witch’s House. Come early and hit up Pumpkinland and pay a visit to the animals in their small zoo.

If you’re looking for hell on wheels
The 20-minute haunted hayride at the Bates Motel in Glenn Mills rolls through the spooky forest at Arasapha Farms, which features more than 50 actors in addition to computer-controlled animations. You can also check out a haunted corn maze.
