An investigation is underway into a fatal police-involved shooting in the South End during which a Boston police officer killed an allegedly armed man who lunged at police.

Boston police said officers were called to 77 Lenox St. just after 3 p.m. for a report of a domestic violence incident.

When officers arrived they found a woman with injuries to her face. She then directed the officers to her boyfriend.

Once inside the home, officers tried to arrest the man, but he instead allegedly armed himself with multiple knives and then lunged at the officers, police said.

That’s when one of the officers fired his gun, hitting the man.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to Boston Medical Center where he later died.

The Boston Police Firearm Discharge Investigation Team responded to the scene and is investigating.

Additionally, the Suffolk district attorney’s office is conducting an independent investigation, which is protocol for police-involved shootings.

“Prosecutors will undertake a comprehensive examination of all the facts and circumstances surrounding the fatality,” the district attorney’s office said.
