Amazon to deliver state’s first fulfillment center to Staten Island

One day very soon, that recognizable Amazon box you find at your door could be locally sourced as the online retailer on Wednesday announced it will open a fulfillment center in Staten Island sometime next year.

The 855,000-square-foot facility will be Amazon’s first in New York state and will bring with it more than 2,250 full-time jobs — whose benefits will start “on day one,” Vice President of Customer Fulfillment Sanjay Shah said in a statement.

“We’ve been talking about the West Shore of Staten Island as our borough’s ‘Jobs Coast,’ and today that talk becomes reality in a big way,” Borough President James Oddo said. “In fact, this project will be the biggest single job creator in our borough’s history. This announcement demonstrates that Staten Island is open for business.”

Employees of the Staten Island Amazon fulfillment center, which will be built by Matrix Development Group, will partner with robotics to fulfill orders, from picking and packing to shipping.

The jobs will also feature competitive hourly wages and a comprehensive healthcare, 401(k) and stock awards package that goes into effect on start day. The company also offers maternity and parental leave benefits and tuition-reimbursement programs for “in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.”
