Defying the typical Barbie image – stick skinny, ample bosom and interesting career options like mermaid and princess – Amy Schumer is expected to star in Sony’s live-action Barbie movie, according to a new report. For those who have already started fat-shaming the comedian on Twitter, Schumer’s character might teach you a few lessons. In the script, Barbie starts out in Barbieland– a land of perfect Barbieswith whomshe just doesn’t fit in, according toHollywood Reporter. After she is banished from the seemingly idyllic world, she comes to the realization that it’s better to be unique than “perfect.”
Mattel has teamed up with producers Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal. In 2014, Sony announced the movie had been written by Jenny Bicks. After looking at three different ideas written last year, Sony decided to go with Hilary Winston’s script, but Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, are expected to rewrite it, according to Hollywood Reporter. Our hope is to capture all of these aspects of Barbie in a modern take of the character that can appeal to moviegoers of all ages.” Mattel has earned billions from Barbie, so understandably, it has been very protective of the brand and has taken its time signing off onthe right script and star,Deadline reported. And in true Twitter fashion, the trolls came out as if on cue calling Schumer “a fat Jewess,” “walrus,” adding racism to the mix and everything else that trolls pepper their Friday night pizzas with.
