Calgary Conservative MP Rob Anders yesterday cleared up controversial comments he wrote on a “Support Our Troops” card to military in Afghanistan last week.
“When in doubt, pull the trigger” was the message scripted by Anders on the card, which was also signed by the likes of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Defence Minister Peter MacKay, and the words sparked mass controversy.
“Last week, I wrote a note on a card to our troops in Afghanistan.
I meant to say, ‘Keep safe and defend yourselves,’” Anders said in the House of Commons yesterday.
“For those who found my note inappropriate, I apologize for any offence taken.”
Anders’s office declined further comment, instead referring to his remarks in the House of Commons.
According to CTV news, MacKay said Anders’s comments were inappropriate.
Despite his apology, Donna Kennedy-Glans, a constituent in Anders’s riding and outspoken opponent of his, was perplexed by his comments.
“My reaction is Rob continues to shoot himself in the foot, and it’s embarrassing for him and it’s embarrassing to be in his riding,” she said.
