Another new administration, another Tom Hanks espresso machine

Sent to another office in the West Wing—a more ovular one, to be specific (if we’re throwing shade, let’s throw shade)—Tom Hanks’ most recently gifted espresso machine might have come with an addendum: Wake. Up.

As it were, because Hanks sent the gift to the White House Press Corps — as he’s done for the past three administrations — we can assume there was nothing pointed or underhanded about the accompanying note, which read:

“To the White House Press Corps: Keep up the good fight for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Especially for the Truth part.” (See photo below.)

Or, seen in another light: Hanks is every kid who, introducing his imaginary friend to his parents, is vehemently told, “he’s fake.” Whereupon, the parents leaving the room, the kid turns resolvedly to the friend and says, “Don’t listen. You’re real. I know you’re real.”

Not to contribute to this notion of the press at large pedaling fake news (this actually happened, we swear). But the message from Dad has been clear.

Tom Hanks is just a really supportive friend.
