Apple iOS 12 releases today. Here’s how to update your iPhone to latest

The iOS 12 update will be avaialble Monday, and if you’ve been anxiously waiting for the latest iPhone update, your time has come.

Apple’s 12th mobile operating system was first announced in June during its Worldwide Developers Conference and the latest iOS release appears to be a significant update to iOS 11, which was released last September.

The latest batch of iPhones that will release in September and October including the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR will all come with iOS pre-installed with the latest feature, but if you’re someone who has an older iPhone, you can still take advantage of many of the features with Apple’s free download that’s set to roll out Monday, September 17.

iOS 12 update: new features

According to Apple, the iOS 12 update will perform faster and is more responsive across more devices. This means if you’re someone still hanging on to your iPhone 5s or iPad Air, you will notice a boost in performance in your older devices when you download iOS 12. While you might notice some improvements with your older devices, your iPhone is only as good as the condition of the battery. If your device has battery issues and shuts off randomly, you shouldn’t expect a miracle from the iOS 12, because you’re likely to still have battery issues even if you have an updated operating system.

Aside from iOS 12 boasting faster overall performance, app launching, keyboard display and camera, latest mobile operating system includes a new grouped notifications feature that groups together message threads and notification topics to help keep them more organized so you’re not looking at a long thread of notifications in your lock screen.

Apple is launching Memoji with iOS 12 and it should be a fun feature people use with Apple’s signature Messages app. Memoji lets you create a digitally animated version of yourself that represents your personality and mood. According to Apple there is also a Memoji maker tool that will let you select and customize your own Memoji.

There are several other features in Apple’s latest iOS that could improve how you use your iPhone including an updated Siri with better functionality, an app for measuring any surface and a new tool called Screen Time, which tells you how much you’re on your phone and includes detailed information such as how often you pick up your device. The Screen Time app will also let you set usage limitations for certain apps on your device.

Does group FaceTime come with iOS 12?

A major feature that was announced at WWDC in June that had many people interested was the group FaceTime feature. With group Facetime, you can hold a video chat with up to 32 people at once.  If you’re looking for this feature with Monday’s iOS release, you will have to wait. According to Apple, group FaceTime will be available in iOS 12 later this fall via a software update.
