Arrest made in connection to human remains found in the Bronx

Arrest made after human remains found in shopping cart in the Bronx

A man has been arrested in connection to a human remains that were found in a folding shopping cart in the Bronx Wednesday, police said.

Darryl Orr of the Bronx was arrested Thursday and initially charged with concealment of a human corpse. After executing a search warrant, the 57-year-old was also charged with criminal possession of controlled substances, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and criminal sale of controlled substances, according to the police report.

Two men collecting cans in the vicinity of East 182nd Street and Walton Avenue made the grisly discovery, NBC4 reported.

Police at first identified the remains, which were inside a cardboard box covered in a black bag in a folding shopping cart, as belonging to a male, but the victim was later identified to be a 27-year-old woman.

Surveillance footage of the intersection where the remains were found show a man pushing the shopping cart along Walton Avenue and leaving it by a garbage pile before walking away, according to NBC4.

Soon after, a woman who was later identified as an apartment maintenance worker, tried to move it before leaving it next to a tree on East 182nd Street, where it sat until the two men happened upon it the following day.

Police are investigating whether the two people seen in the video were involved in the victim’s death, but it isn’t known if the video led to Orr’s arrest. Officials said he knew the victim from the neighborhood, but their relationship was unclear.

No cause of death has been determined, and the woman’s identity has not yet been released pending family notification, police said Friday.
