The municipal politician that represents the unique Halifax community that houses the beloved Bloomfield Centre said he hopes plans for its site will ensure it becomes an arts and culture “centrepiece for the north end.”
Coun. Jerry Blumenthal (Halifax North End) and his council colleagues agreed unanimously last night to approve in principle the master plan for the Bloomfield Centre. The proposal includes creative space for both professional and amateur artists, courtyards and a mix of commercial space and affordable housing.
City staffers also emphasized the buildings — including renovated and new structures — on the land between Robie, Almon and Agricola Streets will be completely accessible.
“I’m so excited to see something like this being done for the people in the north end who have been waiting for such a long time,” Blumenthal said.
Several councillors stood up and voiced their support for the project, including Coun. Dawn Sloane (Halifax Downtown), who said “what’s cool about this whole plan (is that) we’re actually looking at giving space (as) an alternative to a rundown place.”
City staffers called the current Bloomfield Centre a “make-do space” that could cost $8 million just to bring up to standards.
