ATP roundup: Federico Delbonis cruises in Switzerland

No. 5 seed Federico Delbonis of Argentina won 29 of 34 first-serve points and saved both break points he faced en route to a quick 6-3, 6-3 win over Swiss wild card Leandro Riedi on Tuesday in the first round of the Swiss Open Gstaad.

Joining Delbonis was No. 7 seed Laslo Djere. The Serbian defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil 6-4, 6-3, winning 22 of 26 first-serve points and committing no double faults.

Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands outlasted Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (1), smashing 14 aces in the victory. Other winners were Austria’s Dennis Novak and Frenchmen Hugo Gaston and Arthur Rinderknech.

Italy’s Marco Cecchinato upset No. 5 seed Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia 6-1, 6-4 in just over one hour in Umag, Croatia.

Cecchinato never had to save a break point, converted 3 of 5 break points of his own and won 28 of 37 first-serve points (76 percent).

No. 7 seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain rallied to beat France’s Lucas Pouille 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, while Italian No. 8 seed Gianluca Mager did the same against Spain’s Pedro Martinez, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Also advancing Tuesday were Croatian wild card Duje Adjukovic, Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alessandro Giannessi of Italy, Slovakia’s Andrej Martin and Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Germany’s Daniel Altmaier won when French opponent Corentin Moutet retired in the third set.

Mifel Open

Qualifier Ernesto Escobedo beat eighth-seeded Mackenzie McDonald in a first-round matchup of United States players at Los Cabos, Mexico.

Escobedo never hit an ace in the match, but he racked up points on McDonald’s second serve, winning 17 of 25.

Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko, Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama and Sweden’s Elias Ymer also won opening-round matches.
