ATP roundup: Zverev cruises to Geneva quarterfinals

Top-seeded German Alexander Zverev breezed through his first match at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open in Switzerland on Tuesday, downing Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 6-1 in just 66 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.

Zverev, who had a first-round bye, was sloppy at times with six double faults and nine break points faced. But he saved eight of those and converted five of his eight opportunities to break Gulbis, doing so three times in a row to clinch the first set.

Next up for Zverev is Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien, who downed Serbian wild-card Janko Tipsarevic 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the day’s only other Round of 16 match.

The only seeded player in Round of 32 action on Tuesday, No. 6 Adrian Mannarino of France, fell 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 to Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Bulgarian qualifier and former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov fell 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Argentina’s Federico Delbonis.
