Authorities catch inmate who fled Boston halfway house

Authorities have captured an inmate who walked away from a Boston halfway house last Friday.

Gary Smith, who was serving a three to seven year sentence for unarmed robbery, was captured Monday morning in Somerville by the the Massachusetts Department of Correction’s (DOC) Fugitive Apprehension Unit.

Smith walked away from the Brooke House pre-release facility, located at 107 Park Drive near the Back Bay Fens Friday afternoon, prompting authorities to issue a community alert and encourage the public to contact law enforcement with any tips.

According to the DOC, he will be transferred to a higher security facility. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office plans to file charges, according to the DOC.
