Autopsy: Tanker truck driver in Detroit crash died of burns

DETROIT – Preliminary autopsy results found that the driver of a tanker that crashed through a Michigan interstate guardrail – exploding and setting the truck and a nearby house on fire – died of burns.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report the preliminary findings also indicate that 60-year-old driver Ronald A. Martinez probably didn’t have heart problems.

Police had speculated following Thursday’s crash in Detroit that a medical emergency such as a heart attack might have preceded the crash.

Martinez’s truck hit a concrete barrier wall. He was trapped in the cab of his truck as the tanker caught fire and fell some 10 metres onto the ground below.

People in the home escaped the blaze.

The crash remains under investigation.
