Ava DuVernay’s Barbie sold out twice in one day

If you’re one of the fans excited about the new Ava DuVernay Barbie that Mattel released today, sorry – they’re all sold out. The dolls hit the Internet this morning and were completely snatched up on thebarbiecollection.com within a half hour, and again when they were released on Amazon later in the day.

The Barbie version of the “Selma” director was made back in April as part of Mattel’s “Sheroes” collection that also included Kristin Chenoweth and Trisha Yearwood, but was not available to buy. Fans loved it so much that Mattel decided to roll out the new Barbies just in time for the holidays.

“People have really been kind talking about why they are embracing this doll, but it’s certainly not about me. It’s about the image. That’s what they’re responding to,” DuVernay says in an interview with BuzzFeed.
The doll also comes with a Barbie-sized director’s chair. “It’s pretty fantastic — particularly at this moment where the dearth of women filmmakers getting opportunity and access to make what they want is such a conversation, that I’m thrilled this particular profession is being amplified,” she tells BuzzFeed.
All of the proceeds from the sale of the Barbie will be donated to two of DuVernay’s favorite charities – Color of Change, a website that “exists to strengthen Black America’s political voice,” and Witness, an organization that uses video production to fight for human rights.
