Awarding excellence in our future ‘BILDers’

My column last week was about cultivating and mentoring the future leaders of our industry.

At the Association, we have created a specific member committee called Young BILDers and it is chaired by two up-and-coming leaders with the intention of pulling some potential out of the woodwork. It will also help to engage our younger members and allow them to build an association that suits their needs.

This past week, BILD took that one step further. Showing support for an even younger generation of future builders, we awarded Daniel and David Brutto the BILD Award for Performance in the Private Development Seminar course offered at Ryerson University in the School of Urban and Regional Planning.

The brothers are studying in the undergraduate planning program and prepared the best course project assignment and earned the highest grade in the seminar.

BILD was invited to hand out the award this year and we attended the ceremony in honour of our late president and CEO Stephen Dupuis, who arranged with university faculty to have the Award named after the Association and directly reward students excelling in the private development course.

The Association also has an educational partnership with the University of Waterloo’s School of Planning, where BILD’s past president Leith Moore teaches a land development course.

We’ve heard that students often mention the course as a highlight in earning their degree.

BILD also recently committed to enhancing our contribution to an endowment fund at George Brown College by giving $100,000 over the next 10 years.

The endowment has provided dozens of scholarships to students in the College’s Centre for Construction and Engineering Technology, and we know that there are George Brown alumni working in many of our member companies.

Awarding excellence displayed by future BILDers is just one way our association cultivates and mentors the leaders of tomorrow. Congratulations to Daniel and David Brutto!
