B.C. Ferries experiences long weekend of busy crossings

Travellers trying to get home after the Thanksgiving long weekend faced long lines at local ferry crossings yesterday as the effects of Friday’s generator fire on the Spirit of Vancouver Island continued to ripple through the province’s ferry system.

“It was the last long weekend of the season, so the timing couldn’t have been much worse,” B.C. Ferries communication manager Deborah Marshall said.

For most of the day, a two- to three-sailing wait greeted motorists at the Swartz Bay terminal trying to get to Tsawwassen.

B.C. Ferries added extra sailings at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. out of Swartz Bay, and 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. out of Tsawwassen. The ferry company was also prepared to add more late-night sailings if needed, Marshall said.
