B.C. sex workers applaud ruling

Sex worker groups in Vancouver celebrated after a decision by the Ontario Superior Court yesterday ruled that three of Canada’s prostitution laws are unconstitutional because they put sex workers at risk.

“These laws were hurting sex workers, it is time to stop criminalizing them,” said Katrina Pacey, a lawyer with Pivot Legal Society. The ruling, which should have implications across the country, makes it legal — pending an appeal — for prostitutes to communicate with clients, work in groups and live off their earnings.
