Baillie announces run for Cumberland South riding

Interim Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie has officially announced he will run in the Tory stronghold of Cumberland South.

Baillie announced his intention at a press conference Wednesday afternoon in Springhill, where current Cumberland MLA Murray Scott announced his resignation.

Scott has held the seat since 1998, but said in August he wanted to give somebody else a chance to represent the people of Cumberland South.

While the riding managed to stay blue during the NDP’s decisive 2009 victory, Baillie’s place in the legislature is anything but guaranteed. The Liberals are likely to paint him as a parachute candidate — despite Baillie growing up in nearby Truro.

The NDP likely have little hope of winning the riding, after cancelling plans to build a brand new jail in Springhill last year.
