Baker most popular governor in the country: poll

Though a recent poll showed that the Republican president’s support is slipping, some Republican governors — especially in blue states — are gaining popularity, according to a new poll.

And the most popular governor in the entire country? That ranking goes to Massachusetts’ own Gov. Charlie Baker.

Morning Consult, a media and technology company, released the findings on Tuesday of their poll ranking the popularity of every governor in the United States.

Baker earned the top spot with a 71 percent approval rating, according to the poll. Seventeen percent disapprove of Baker’s performance and 12 percent of responders were undecided about the Republican governor, who is up for re-election next year.

The top 10 most popular governors were all Republicans and a few of them, like Baker, are in control of blue states.  Behind Baker at number two was Maryland’s Larry Hogan with a 68 percent approval rating and Vermont’s Phil Scott came in at the eighth spot with a 62 percent approval rating.

All three of those states voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, despite their Republican governors. Clinton won Massachusetts with 60 percent of the vote, while President Donald Trump got about 33 percent.

“It may seem odd that Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is so popular in Massachusetts, one of the country’s bluest states,” said Boston College Law Professor Richard Albert in a statement. “But there is no secret to his success: He has run the commonwealth successfully as a nonpartisan manager.”

In Massachusetts alone, the poll surveyed more than 3,800 voters from April 1 through July 10 in order to determine Baker’s popularity.

Nationwide, Morning Consult surveyed more than 195,000 registered voters for the poll.

New Jersey’s Chris Christie had the lowest approval rating of all U.S. governors with just 25 percent of voters there liking the job he’s been doing. Sixty nine percent disapproved of Christie, and only six percent said they were undecided.

Trump’s own approval rating has dropped to 36 percent, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll from earlier this week.
