Barack Obama cried after dropping Malia off at Harvard

Parents tend to get teary-eyed when they send their kids off to college, and President Barack Obama is no exception.

The former commander-in-chief recently dropped his daughter Malia off in Cambridge to start her journey at Harvard University, which turned out to be quite the emotional experience. While speaking at a fundraiser in honor of former Vice President Joe Biden’s late son Beau on Monday, President Obama opened up about seeing his child start her college career.

“I dropped off Malia at college, and I was saying to Joe and Jill [Biden] that it was a little bit like open-heart surgery, and I was proud that I did not cry in front of her,” Obama said. “But on the way back, the Secret Service was off, looking straight ahead, pretending they weren’t hearing me as I sniffled and blew my nose. It was rough.”

Obama added that no matter what people accomplish in their lives, “the thing that we’ll remember are the joys that our children, and hopefully way later, our grandchildren bring.”

Malia moved into her dorm at the university in late August, with the help of her proud parents. The family was also spotted out and about in Harvard Square, and even stopped for a bite at Harvest during their trip to town.

Following the summer move-in day, the former First Lady was back in Boston on Wednesday for a keynote appearance at the Inbound 2017 conference. According to a report by Boston.com, Michelle Obama weighed in on President Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton.

“Any woman who voted against Hillary Clinton voted against their own voice,” she said during a discussion with author Roxane Gay.
