Bartenders get playful with Halloween cocktails

No tricks here (other than a disappearing act or two), just great cocktails to check out on Halloween weekend.

Zombie, Drexler’s

There are three kinds of rum in this cocktail, so we’re all clear on what the name means. Jamaican, Puerto Rican and 151-proof Demerara rums are stirred together with Herbsaint, Angostura bitters, falernum, Donn’s Mix and grenadine — what a way to go. Then it’s garnished with the eyeball of the last sap who tried it (kidding! It’s a lychee stuffed with a raspberry). Only available on Halloween night.

Death’s Door, Spyglass

Get high above the ghouls prowling the streets to party away The Graveyard Shift, a costumed evening beginning at 8 p.m. emceed by a drag host, an appetizer assortment and great (covered) seats to watch the Empire State Building’s light show. Sip one of their hallowed cocktails for the night like Death’s Door, made with Breckenridge bourbon, cinnamon agave and fresh orange juice.

Cotton Candy Old Fashioned, Piora

Here’s something for the kid in you with a grownup twist. At the West Village’s Piora — don’t skip the food, this restaurant is Michelin-starred — head bartender Shinya Yamao created a candy cocktail that begins with housemade cotton candy in a rocks glass, then an Old Fashioned (featuring Old Forester Straight Bourbon Whisky) is poured over it. When the candy melts, the drink is ready, no trick-or-treating necessary.

Black Dog, The Fillmore Room

Because a haunted house with a liquor bar is the dream, head to the Fillmore Room, where the ghost of a Hellhound is said to prowl (and nibble the occasional chair leg). The cocktail in its honor, though, is a sweet seasonal treat —muddled blackberries, mezcal, lime juice and agave nectar — and comes with a real dog treat to take home to your own hound.

Galloping Hessian, Crimson & Rye

Unlike the Headless Horseman, this cocktail won’t make you lose your skull (though it might tingle a bit). The Galloping Hessian, which is another name for the legendary villain who haunts Sleepy Hollow, combines Sailor Jerry rum and Ancho Reyes for a smooth kick, then adds pumpkin purée, maple syrup, old fashioned bitters and pumpkin foam.

Calavera, Cantina Rooftop

Nelson Lemus’ creation (the name means “skull” in Spanish) has a tequila blanco base, with seasonal touches like Fuji apple juice, Elizabeth Allspice Dram, ginger syrup and lemon juice. Have it at Cantina’s Dia de los Muertos party Oct. 29-30 from 5 p.m.-9 p.m., along with $5 tequila shots, live music, free sugar skullface painting and a costume contest for two $80 bar tabs.

Black Mamba, Artisanal Bistro

This whiskey-based cocktail really does look like something out of a witch’s kitchen, and it’s only available Halloween night. The bar uses squid ink to create black ice, and over it pours Whistle Pig Rye, pomegranate juice, vanilla bitters, Amaro Montenegro (an Italian digestif) and mint, then garnished with blackberries.
