Be aware of bad weather, Estabrooks urges drivers

Transportation Minister Bill Estabrooks isn’t planning any immediate highway changes after a recent Acadian Lines bus crash, but he is encouraging driver safety.

Estabrooks said he is open to ideas such as snow fences to improve highway safety, but in the meantime he said the most important thing is for people to be aware of bad weather.

“I urge drivers to take caution and be prepared for winter driving conditions. There are some sections of Nova Scotia highways that are treacherous at best,” he said.

One of those areas is on Highway 104 near Monastery.

Last Saturday, an Acadian Lines bus slid off the road there and crashed into the Tracadie River. No one was killed, but five of the six passengers were taken to hospital.
