Barb and Ernie’s has boasted the “Best Eggs Benedict” for decades: I decided to see for myself. By 9 a.m., the spacious restaurant was nearly full — though the line-up out the door wouldn’t really start until 10 or so. This is one popular place.

Leafing through the extensive breakfast menu, I focused on the benny combos. I weighed accompaniments ranging from ham or tomato to steak or smoked salmon. Given the European flair of the restaurant, I chose eggs Benedict with bratwurst ($15.95) and settled in to wait with a cup of hot, dark coffee ($2.50).

My platter arrived in no time, loaded with two eggs on English muffins, two huge bratwurst and a mound of fried potatoes that could fix a pothole. Ernie swung by our table: “When you try the bratwurst, use the other bottle,” he said.

I sampled the creamy, dreamy benny — that butter-infused white wine sauce was heavenly. The potatoes were crisp and chewy, while the bratwurst were plump, meaty and dense with flavour. The recommended bottle was full of curry ketchup, a common condiment in Holland, which suffused my bratwurst with spice and sweet cardamom.

Best eggs Benedict indeed, along with delightful service and a warm welcome anytime. Barb and Ernie’s hits every note, which is why it has lasted 35 years and people happily wait in the rain for a table.

Dining out

Crepes Galore While I’m raving about Edmonton’s classics, let me plug The Creperie. This dimly-lit, intimate spot has been a romantic haven for almost 35 years. Ask about Twilight Dining and thank me later.

Crepe, Krepe A new burger contender, Rodeo Burger, has burst on the university campus scene. They have attracted large crowds of customers in the short time they have been open.
