Big screen romance

Ah, the movies. What better way to spend a frigid Friday night in February with your latest crush? Sitting in a dark theatre, close enough for your shoulders and elbows to touch, and maybe reaching for that hot, buttery popcorn or the Junior Mints at the same time.

Going to the movies has always been a good date- night option says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com.

“There’s just something about dinner and a movie that really says romance,” he said. “You can bond through the experience of enjoying a movie together and being able to talk about it after.”

Movies are a great conversation builder and point of reference for people, he said. “So it instantly allows rapport to develop between you,” he added.

But be careful, warns dating expert Kim Hughes, editor-in-chief for online dating site Lavalife, going to the movies is not always the best first date.

“You don’t really get a chance to get to know each other,” she said. The dating guru says that going to a movie on the first date is also too much of a time commitment.

“As a general rule we say great first dates … are about an hour,” she said. “Because that way, if it’s fantastic, you can make a second date and go to a movie or go out for dinner or commit more time.

“If it’s not fantastic, then an hour is a manageable amount of time to lose.”

And although a romantic comedy might seem like a perfect date-night movie pick, Hughes suggests steering clear of them at the beginning of a relationship.

“I think that there would be kind of a squirmy factor with that,” she said.

For Valentine’s Day weekend, Dergarabedian suggests a good date movie — as strange as it may sound — might be the new version of Friday the 13th.

Romantic comedies such as He’s Just Not That Into You and Confessions of a Shopaholic are also in theatres in time for Valentine’s Day, but Hughes suggests these might be better to go see with friends.

Or, at least until you’ve gotten past those initial awkward stages of the dating game.
