Big shoes to fill in Ward 12

Five candidates vying for alderman in an open ward makes things interesting for Ward 12 constituents looking for their next representative.

And that next alderman has big shoes to fill, according to several people Metro interviewed at the Ward 12 Civic Camp forum in Quarry Park last night.

“I just want someone to represent the community and their needs the best. (Ric) McIver was very involved in the community and we need something like that again,” former Copperfield community association president Bruce Borstmayer said.

Even candidate Shane Keating agreed McIver did a good job.

“I wouldn’t have run if he was in it still because I would only run if I felt there was a gap. But he did well,” Keating said.

Most candidates agreed readily the biggest issues facing the southeast communities in Ward 12 are recreation facilities and transportation — a sentiment echoed by dozens of the 100 citizens at the forum.
