‘Bike rescuer’ charged with theft

A North Vancouver man who ran a business purporting to rescue stolen bikes and return them to their rightful owners has been arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and theft.

Gordon Sinclaire Blackwell, 41, who operated bikerescue.org, was arrested yesterday at a garage he rents in Surrey.

“These charges stem from an investigation that started in the summer of 2009 after a pattern of bicycle thefts occurred,” said RCMP Cpl. Marlene Morton.

In November, North Vancouver RCMP executed a search warrant at Blackwell’s business in New Westminster, where 153 bicycles were recovered.

Police have now returned close to 40 bicycles to their original owners but more are unaccounted for. Anyone who has had a bike stolen since 2008 is asked to email nvstolenbikes@rcmp-grc.gc.ca, and to include the make, model and colour of the bicycle.
