Bikes, plenty more up for grabs at VPD auction

About 500 bicycles and some unusual stuff like mascot costumes, bags of gold jewelry and even toothbrushes are going under the hammer at the massive Vancouver Police Recovered Goods auction this weekend.

The bikes, many of them high-end brands, are usually most popular and are being auctioned Saturday.

“They usually go for 10 to 25 per cent of the cost of a new bike,” said Rob Kavanagh of Able Auctions.

Bidding on all other items starts Sunday at 10 a.m.

They include cameras, video game consoles, tools and bags of random gold jewelry.

“We do a lot of jewelry,” Kavanagh said.

“You can’t make a lot of it, so we put it in a big bag and people buy them for the meltdown value.”

Kavanagh suggested taking advantage of a preview today and tomorrow, noon to 6 p.m.

“Inspect the items, go home, do research and write the values down,” he said. “That way you don’t get too excited and bid too much.”

About 1,500 people are expected over the two days.
