The Yorkville model bungalow at the King Country Estates site, located north of the GTA in Nobleton, is geared toward empty-nesters who want to harken back to the style of living they had before the kids came along.
Designer Mike Niven went for a fully up-to-date look that avoids referencing anything traditional — in fact there are no conspicuous retro touches anywhere.
“This is not a ’50s throwback or homage to modernism, it’s contemporary that’s got an elegance to it, it’s serene and welcoming,” Niven said.
For the appropriately named Yorkville design, Niven took influences from the tropes of downtown life.
“We decided to get a bit more urban with this design. We looked to downtown to create something that belonged in a city condo, something more sophisticated than what (buyers) were used to when living with their kids,” Niven said.
A tonal colour palette centred on tans and browns punched up with green highlights helps the home feel more grown up and enticing without straying into overly sentimental territory.
The showpiece kitchen, which looks out onto the living room, features quartz countertops and a tastefully restrained style that focuses on the strength of elegant details.
“We sort of took more of a European kitchen approach. It’s not just one big line of cabinets — everything is under-mounted or built-in, even the sinks are square. Everything is more streamlined so it looks like a part of the living area,” Niven said.
