New Yorkers are expected to stay indoors this weekend as Winter Storm Jonas will bring the season’s first significant snowfall to the area starting Saturday.

The New York region had been under a blizzard watch, which as of this morning was upgraded to a blizzard warning — beginning Saturday at 4 a.m. and lasting until noon Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm is expected to bring 6 to 10 inches of heavy snow to all five boroughs, coastal portions of northeast New Jersey, and Long Island, along with strong, potentially damaging winds. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s and winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

At a press conference Thursday morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that “ New Yorkers should be ready for a big storm this weekend, make the precautions now.”

Though schools are expected to be open Sunday, the city has suspended Alternate Side Parking regulations on Saturday to facilitate snow removal. The MTA has also canceled all of its weekend work.

“We’ve all been lulled to sleep by how warm the winter’s been,” de Blasio said. “Take this very, very seriously. We’re giving people a clear warning early.”
